    Mazda RX8

My mates been lookin at getting a Mazda RX8, reviews sound really possitive but many say it drinks fuel like anything.
Never really did inderstand the whole rotary engine and how it managed to pump out 221 bhp from a 1.3 engine!

Anyway, does anyone know a lot about the RX8? And has anyone here driven one?

    Cheers,

Technically its a 2.6 as its 1.3 per rotor with twin rotors. very revvy but no torque so i dont like it personally. uses oil like its fuel too !

think you will find it is two rotors both with the capacity of 654cc making 1.3Litre engine.

the main reason they are so thirsty on the fuel is the fact that each rotor fires three times per full revoultion.

I looked at getting one a few months back before i got the VXR, as people have already said heavy on fuel and oil. Also they say that the engine can require a complete rebuild at 60K due to the way the rotary engine works and it can cost 3k and upwards. Also you have to rev the life out of them to get any sort of performance out of them having said that I do like the looks and interior of them very nice looking motor

apparenlty the rotor tip on the RX8 have been redesigned to last longer than they did on the old RX7 engine, so they "should" see more than 60K miles but wether than will or not is another matter.

but either way at some point in the engines life the rotors will need to be retipped.

    yep... 2x654cc....

nobody was quite sure how to measure the capacity of rotary engines to start with, including Mazda. But they managed to sort it out, and it is indeed a 1.3... but not a normal one

They are very nice cars, and they feel quite special too

I think it rather have a stock RX7 over the 8, but thats just me.

Working at a Mazda dealer I wouldnt have one.

Shocking oil and fuel economy, they have only just sorted how to get the things started properly and they still break the most gargantuan catalytic convertor Ive ever seen.
