Well the new bells arrived in the week. It's a long long story and quite complicated but short version is that the old ones didn't work. The kit fitted but the wheels wouldn't go back on again without hitting the calipers. So I did a bit of measuring and I worked out how I thought they should fit. So the proof of the pudding so they say is in the eating, so today I thought I'd try one and see how it went.
After fitting the new bell to the outer disc I installed it on the hub. Here's the disc before
And after, it's moved 4mm inward. It also incorporates a 3mm spacer on the outside of the bell.
It was rubbing on the deflector plate and I was going to remove this but in the end I just bent it away from the disc and that worked fine. Fitted the caliper using some temporary spacers (long story) and test fitted the same wheel that it would hit before, this time it cleared easily.
Now the person who made this kit (can't mention names at this point) said the problem was my wheels not his work. So I test fitted another brand new wheel I'd bought off E-Bay for 1p this was a Stil Auto 5 , ET was 42 which was 2 more than my Mille Miglia which are ET40 but the Stil Auto 5 was 7.5J against the Milles 7J.
Here's the new wheel fitted
Now this only just cleared the caliper, the Mille Miglias had about 2-3mm clearance, the Still Auto only has 1mm at most, not a good pic I'm afraid as the camera had trouble focusing on the gap
So everything is looking good, just need to get some new spacers made for the caliper mounting and they can go on. I removed the kit again and then noticed my front N/S tyre was scrubbing badly on the inside edge. I knew the tread was getting low but I was going for new rims, 17" this time, so I didn't want to buy new tyres plus the Mille Miglias were all flat spotted to some extent. So I removed the Milles and will now scrap them I've had to put on my old 15" alloys so even if the Brembos were fitted I'd have had to remove them anyway as they won't fit under 15" wheels. As soon as I source a set of 17" OZ Palladios for a decent price I should have the Brembos finally fitted at long last.
