What is the fault? I have become familiar with the electrics do to a recent electrical problem on my coupe. BTW, Haynes has decent diagrams, although they do not cover the coupe and things like satnav, heated seats, cruise control etc.

    Right here goes:

When i dont have my lights on, if i press the brake pedal, my brakes lights come on, plus my front side lights.

When my lights are on, my rear lights are brighter than usual, also my 3rd brake light stays on. This is before ive even pressed the brake pedal. When i do press the brake pedal, all 3 lights shine even brighter.

I get a warning on the computer sayin "brake light"

I have tried cleaning the earth located under the rear left light, and have also checked and cleaned the brake pedal switch.

I really think that its a bad earth somewhere but am completely stuck and at a wits end.

Really hope u can help mate

What happens if you step on the brake with the ignition off?

I asked this question just to double check:
    http://www.m1gst.com/vb/showthread.php?t=56146

I am 95% sure this problem is because of a faulty bulb. The dual filament bulbs can short the two filaments together creating a loop which sends a 12v supply through other lights and back to the dash and out to the lights again. Remove the dual filament bulbs and inspect them. If you have spares, replace them or buy some new ones. If the problem is still there, I'll look up the circuit diagrams when I get home tonight.

Yeah, I'd suggest removing all bulbs,

then add them one by one to check if they are at fault...

Have you had either brake/tail light bulb out recently??

The bulb holders on all MK4s are not the best design and it's very easy for the stop/tail to be inserted the wrong way round, or even slip in it's holder, causing the lights to go awry. It's just a thought before you commit to major surgery

I had this happen in my Mk2 twice - deffo the dual filament bulbs (Rear light/brake). First time it happened it took me ages to figure out what was going on. Second time - I knew straight away and replaced the bulbs wiothout checking and it fixed it.

This is not a common problem, but is more common of cars with big subs as the vibration can shake the filaments together.
