Servicing 1.6 8v, what would go under your bonnet?

    Hiya Guys,

I've been lurking around the forum for a few days now, soaking up your fine advice. Hereís my spec, donít all laugh at once, please stagger it and compound my misery.

    I've an:
    Astra G
    2003
    1.6 8v (ooohh the shame )
    z16se
    5 door
    <20k

A bad choice in favour of low mileage rather than performance - doh, however I do a lot of Motorway mileage and think a good spec service will pay off in reliability in years to come, so Iím looking for recommendations for:

Oil 5w-40 fully synthetic (if its worth it in my case)
    Oil filter
Spark plugs Ė Quality ones (again is it worth it in my case)

Any thing else recommended for a quality service. Whereís best to pick this stuff up and whatís a good price.

Iíve almost been converted to modding too, thinking of de-restricting, vectie c pipe and panel filter. Do these mods impact upon reliability i.e. take 5000 miles of the life span of the engine .

I love the Astra lines but as the saying goes 'You canít polish a 8 valve turd,' however with your advice guys, am gonna try!

    Cheers fellaz

go ahead with the veccy c pipe and panel filter.i cant see it takeing 5000 miles of the engine life and i have had mine done for the last 8 months and had no troubles with it.

Yeah it may lack some of the horses of the other models but its got some useful torque and even more noticeable with an upgraded induction/exhaust. Let the engine breathe easier and you'll free up a few horses - nowt major cos its still an 8valver but youll notice the improvement. I'd personally go down the styling route as u clearly wont be able to compete with the big boys in the performance stakes. But hey we all gotta start somewhere. Yes Ive got an 8valver too (had loads of cars b4 but had to get this due to colourful licence! lol) Good luck with the modifying/personalising and welcome to A/S
Love the name anyway! Very amusing!!!

I would probably put 10W/40 semi synth in your engine.

    5W/40 would be too thin

The Z16SE is waaaay better than the pile of turd that is the X16SZR. Now that's a truly woeful engine.
