    White dials and headlights dimming.

    Hey Guys,

Ive had this problem since I got the car. It only seems to happen when I start the car. When you start the car the lights and dials are quite dim when you rev the engine they go back to normal, when the revs drop it dims again. Also when I put the indicators on they dim, and if I use the electric windows.

Since buying the car I haven't touched the electrics so its nothing Ive done, and the car had nothing that was non standard fitted to it. I wonder if I need a new alternator.

    Any ideas?

    John

sounds like your battery needs replacing mate, and possably your alternator. Shouldnt dim like that

    Thanks

Never thought of the battery. To be honest it looks like its never been replaced. So could be 5 years old now. Might try borrowing my mates new battery. I stupidly left a brand new battery in my cav when the men came to tow it away.

Ive heard you can upgrade your alternator, to stop you having problems if you have a big sound system. Do you know how many amps the normal alternator in a 2.2 coupe pushes out?

I think the 2.2 is the same as all the larger engined Astras, 100A. It's pretty feeble, especially in a diesel like mine. I have the same dimming, but I know my battery is knackered (one of the cells is burnt out!).

Does anyone know if this dimming causes other problems?

When I whack the bass up on my stereo (Bass amp runs 900w RMS) not only do the instrument lights dim, the headlights do too (noticable from both inside and outside the car!)

So long as the alternator light doesn't come on, should this not do it any harm?

Just means your pulling to much power from the battery, if you upgraded to a better (diesel bats are good) it should not do this.

you could go for a 120A or 140A alternator and a bigger battery
    120A from a astra turbo
    140A from a vectra c

Do you have a power cap? I'm going to use one with my sub along with a bigger alternator and a better battery.
