Excess revving/auto revving on cold engine start up

Ok then only noticed this problem since the cold weather has kicked in. When starting up the car in the morning, the revs shoot up to 2000 rpm then settle at 1500 rpm for about 30 seconds, then the revs drop to about 700rpm and fluctuate back up to 1500 rpm, auto revving itself, without being able to idle smoothly. Once the car's warmed up though it idles normally as it should do

    any ideas?

Check the connection on the coolant temperature sensor.

My X18XE1 does that to a certain extent, oddly more so in warm weather tho...

I was told it's intended to warm up the catalytic converter more quickly.

The idle is going to be a little high just after a cold start. it is normal.
    But the fluctuating sounds strange.
Mine idles at around 1500rpm just after a cold start, it allows the engine to heat-up and reach operating temperature a bit quicker, and helps to warm up the catalytic converter.

shouldn't idle at 2 grand, even in a start up in the cold though? clean all the connections and the TB.

its normal for it to idle around the 1500 mark then drop down to normal idle
