buying my first astra. any tips?

    hi

im a newbie to these forums so please excuse me if i've put this in the wrong place, but i've browsed around and this seems the most appropiate.

until last year i owned a vectra b but when i changed to a newer model i got a mondeo and have hated it ever since.

i am now going back to vauxhall but getting an Astra and was wondering if there are any know faults etc i should look out for ( i got caught out with the mondeo keys/ rear lights/ c.locking) and really dont want to fall on my face twice.

i am looking to purchase a mk4 1.6 cd/gl/gls on about 5 years old, and any advise would be greatly appriciated.

    Mnay thanks

    Welcome to the site,

Mk 4's didnt come in GL or GLS spec. You should be looking for a Cd, CDX or Elegance

    Don't get a 5 year old 1.6 8v - that's the totally and utterly woeful 75hp engine. Total junk.

The 1.4 16v and 1.6 16v are good engines, though.

take it over speed bumps on a test drive and listen for a creaking at the front as it is anti rool bar bushes and i have been told it is a common prob and they are a pain to change

    hi
thanks to everyone for the tips. im definately more interested in the comfort than the speed so have deceide to go and look at a 1.6i 16v CD i have seen advertised near me. it says its a 1999, 60,000 miles with a full vauxhall service history .
i know from my veccy that vauxhalls need the cam-belt done every 40-60,000 miles so im hoping its been done. i have also read that i should be look for misty headlights and squeeky rear brakes, so i will be keeping an eye out for those probs and fingers crossed all will be ok.
