You really want to leave it running for at least 3 weeks beofre adding fish to build up the basic bacteria. Also, if you know anyone else with a tropical fish tank, try and get some of their water and add it, as this will increase the bacteria level before adding the fish.
Once the fish are in, this is when the cycling begins, as you need 3 types of bacteira, one to get rid of the amonia, one to get rid of the nitrates, and one to get rid of the nitrites. These will all work with eachother to keep the tank stable.

Also, get some hardy fish to start with...like Neon Tetra...because you will loose a lot of the first ones. I got though 20 neons before my tank fully settled. I'll try and get some picks of my set up hosted tomorrow.

I've had mine up and running for 6 months and am only just starting to get some nice decent fish in it.

hi mate so you went for the tank nice one
pick a gravel or sand you want when you pick the tank up also a back ground
an a few rocks to place in the tank.
fill it up with water also its helps to use a water dechlorinator let the tank run over night with a lot of air bubbles in the tank i would say buy a air pump as well and use a 6 inc air stone in the tank all the time.
you could put 4 sword talls is 1 male to 4 girls
hear is a vid of them they are very strong fish but leave them on there own for the first few weeks to

We tend to use Aquasafe during setup and during any water changes. I've always left a new tank to stand for at least a week before putting any fish in to allow the water to mature a little.

    A week to mature........................

This one took 7 weeks to mature But its been running for 2 years now trouble free.

I use water from my local aquatic shop, its called RO water which is filtered through layers of substrate to remove all the crap!
I then have to add marine salt and mix for 24 hours, oh and thats once a week 2 gallons
