    camshaft oil seals

    Re: Astra 1.8 Sport 16v Twincam 1998

I am having a problem with oil leaking from one of the camshaft seals. Both seals have been replaced but one of them is still leaking. There is a slight mark on the camshaft but nothing too severe. Could this be the reason why the new seal is still leaking as there is no back pressure in camshaft cover? Is it possible that oil could be coming from anywhere else, the oil is in the area located behind the timing belt pullies. This is how i feel as i am now fed up after spending the last two days under the bonnet!

    Thanks for any replies.

    Welcome to the site.

It's likely the damage to the camshaft is causing the leak. My folks had the same problem on a 1.4 K-Series Rover engine. That needed the camshaft replaced, along with new seals, belt, and alternator.

The alternator had to be replaced as it got full of oil from the leak, and then went on fire. Can't beat a good oil fuelled underbonnet fire.
