Hey guys, went out in the car tonight....as i pulled on the drive and my father got out of the car we noticed the car was misfiring.
Mostly on the exhaust note....but walking to the front of the car you could hear the engine missing slightly.
Anyway i thought it maybe due to the engine being cold as it was only a short distance we traveled and my car doesnt get that warm all that quickly.
So i took it for a drive....drove down a long straight stuck behind some slower moving traffic, than usual on this specific road (bearing in mind its a national speedlimit road)
Was at about 40mph in 4th, anyway when it came to the roundabout and i turned off the roundabout up a road that leads me between some fields...i started to accelerate....not hard, but going up to about 3000-3500rpm in 2nd the engine really started rattling its nads off.
So i pulled over in a layby and looked at oil level, and phoned my father that suggested i drove the car home very gently....as i was withing a mile or two of my parents house. In the end the engine was progressively getting noiser with the rattle....this was at about 2000rpm.....anything over just gave me even more rattle.
I made it home at which point turning into the bottom of the street the car made a humongous bang, i thought something had dropped off.
Made it onto the drive and found it would run.......not die off the revs or stall, but just run really badly.
Me and my father have just been looking at the car outside.....duck oiled the HT Leads to disperse any damp at the spark plug end and coil pack end.
Also we checked the plugs, although plug 1 looks a very faint brown colour...we suspect that this plug is missing also, as turning the car over resulted in the plug becoming slightly damp at the core.
Plug 2, checked that...that was sooty...aswell, we tried changing the plugs 1 & 2 over for the NGK twin probe plugs that was in the car when i got it.....changing plug 2 improved the engines running.....but still its misfiring...plug 3 & 4 are white at the tips, so they look like there "lean".
Maybe the lambda is picking up on the fuel, and leaning the fuel mix out?
With the HT Leads off of plugs 1 & 2 individually the engine would still run without the leads being connected although misfiring of course, taking plugs 3 & 4's leads off individually wouldn't let the engine run at all, indicating to me that the plugs 1 & 2 arn't firing correctly.
My father tested the spark by grounding a NGK plug i had spare to the head while i cranked the engine and he says the spark is weak.
Now we thought it was the Spark Coil.
I dont fully understand this bit, but ill ask my dad to tell me what to type later on.
But ill try explain anyway, due to the fact a 4 cylinder engine normally fires in the pattern of cylinders 1-4-3-2....and the way the coil pack links up to the spark plugs, and the coil controls 2 plugs per side....and the whole which stroke each pistons on....makes my dad wonder why its suggesting spark plugs 1 & 2 arnt firing right, when the theory of how it runs, rules out the possibility that it cant be both of these plugs.
Sorry if that was confusing, as it is to me....will get him to type it on later in more detail, as it has me a little stumped.
Also Sorry for the Long post, but i hope someone can help me track this problem down.
