Totally agree, i never take my car for repairs because i dont trust whoever's doing it would really care about the quality of the job they do. Most jobs i would tackle my self to save cash and hopefully learn a few things!

Mind you it's gonna be freezing 2nite and i've gotta get my manifold back on!

On newer cars I like to keep a fully stampted dealer history

Im planning on handling the service on the mk3 myself though

all i do is go to a friends work shop an use there ramp's drop the oil every 5k an a filter for £13,plugs £10 4 prong ones,
we did jace's back box at the place i use to do my car a bit cold this time of year
but the ramps make it dead easy
the mk4 is a old car now so i would say i can do it all my self but i will still get a service done once a year for the stamp at a garage

My damned log book hasn't been stamped for any service I've had it in for with VX - I didnt know they were supposed to (being a new driver) and they've never asked/told me! I've personally had a full service, normal service, and cam belts changed since owning the car (2.5 years now) and no stamps from either! I'm inclined to take it where ever is cheapest, or do things myself. Its astounding to think how much money they must be making as a company, for 60/70 quid an hour!!

    Re log books!

If the back street garage you take it to are certified vauxhall trained (most are) then they can stamp ya book - and its valid.
I used to have a vectra and every time we took it to main dealers to have a service within a week the ECU light always came on - in one case a new ECU was fitted - well over a bloody grand at VX dealer.
so i always use a reliable garage and never had a prob.
    Astra 1.6 16v SXi 3dr of course!

I use the guy who lives two doors down from the house. He's the mechanic who fixes and services all the herses in N. Ireland (they're modified so normal dealers don't touch them). He knows his stuff, and knows his Vauxhalls. He also has occasional access to a Tech2 as well, which is useful.

I would only get a garage to service my car when its to keep a warranty valid, otherwise I do it myself, don't see the point in paying someone to check that the lights work and to oil door hinges among other things!

I'm a keen DIY'er with a fair bit of experience but its not difficult to do.
