FAO: Anybody who has blanked their EGR valve off before.

    Hi,

I've been having problems with my EGR valve recently (I think I have anyway!), so today I took it off, gave it a good spray and scrape out, and I've blanked it off with a thin bit of tin. Started it up and it was a bit grumbly at first but then seemed to level out to quite a nice idle. Pulled away slightly differently (I can't work out whether better or worse), and has been ok so far.

What I'm wondering is there any potential negative side effects to having the EGR valve blanked off coz now that it is, I'm quite happy with the way it's running, but if it's gonna do anything I'd rather get it replaced.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

I've blanked my X18XE1 EGR valve off with a bit of tin and it's been fine for the last 10,000 miles.

I just cut a peice of tin to the same shape as the gasket just without any holes in the middle to blank off both holes on the valve and yeah it's still plugged in.

To be perfectly honest, it feels nicer than it has since I've had it, so I reckon I've located a problem there, I was just making sure that I'm not using up twice as much fuel or wrecking something on my car by doing so.

The NOx emissions will go up so possible MOT problems and maybe the Cat will be damaged long term.

It didn't cause me any problems on the MOT test. Passed with flying colours.
