Major service - When to do it?

I've got a 2001 1.8 16v SRI astra, I did a search on here about service intervals and when the cambelt etc. should be changed and generally it appeared to be 40k miles, however after looking in my service book it says 60k or 6yrs so i'm a little confused??

What exactly does the major service consist of? My cars coming up to 4 years old in December and its done 45k now

Just wondering what it should need doing??

I'm getting the oil and filter changed this week as a start

    Cheers

Timing belt, water pump, and all fluids including brake fluid. Some people like to get the gearbox oil changed as well at the 4 year mark.

The 60K it refers to in your manual is actually a mistake by Vauxhall. I purchased some items from my local vauxhall dealer and on the VAT reciept I got from them was big I mean massive notices all over it stating that the book is incorrect and CAM belts should be changed at the 40K interval.

£410.75 inc parts, labour and Vat

This price is for the cambelt kit and a new waterpump and coolant change, a major service/inspection including spark plugs, pollen, air and fuel filters, a brake fluid change and a reduction for not replacing the oil and oil filter.

That sound like a normal Vauxhall price?

yup affraid so m8. A bit on the pricey side. I was quote £475 for my 40k service cam, tensioners, water pump usual rubbish and my local vaux dealer throws in a regass and sanitise my air con as well for that. Then again I should bloody hope they do. My local vaux kicks ass nothings too much trouble for them. Collect my car do it and bring it back.

Goit another quote from another nearby Vauxhall dealer and thats £408 but mentions "Gas Treatment" as well....wonder if thats same as what yours did

They also collect car and bring it back as well so think they might be better option unless I go non-vauxhall

    Cheers

Yeah I'm sure it is a A/C regas and sanitize, decent price BTW. I wouldn't worry about it being a Vauxhall service I've heard bad things about dealerships too. Theres a dealership just up the road from me and they are as useful as a chocolate fire guard. So I travel a bit further to get the service from Vauxhall.

But if your mates with a bloke who owns a garage or works in one then I'd take it there for the service coz your mates won't let you down especially when its ur pride and joy and they know it. Stamps in a log book looks nice but I'd rather make sure its done properly.

You can get a cambelt kit off E-Bay for around £35. This includes rollers, tensioner and belt. Just need to find a water pump and take them all in with the car and ask them to fit the parts you've supplied. Saves quite a bit of money and as they are genuine Vx parts they can't refuse saying they are sub standard.
