    Dodgy steering

I own a 1992 astra mk3 1.4 si. It has no power steering. When driving, the steering wheel feels really loose, and when on a bumpy road its a pain to keep the car in a straight line. However when doing moneuvers (spelling?) its really heavy like a non-PAS car should be.
What could be wrong with the car? The previous owner put 15" inch TSW alloys on, and has 195 tires....could there be something wrong with the offset causing this?
Also someone mentioned the steering rack, and also said the cost of fixing this is about £400. If u think it is this, could u have ur own guess at the price of a new rack?
    Thanx

I have a clio, there's lots of play in the steering, however, i've been told I need to get the universal joint (the UJ) welded and it'll be fine.... I've been told I shouldn't pay no more than 30 quid for this.

also, it's a common problem in mk1 clio's and loads of people have got it done..

not sure if its' the same concept but it may help
