Unhappy What is it with Astra's and EGR valves?

Well just over a week ago, my astra was running very rough, revving itself and nearly stalling and finally the engine management light came on and the car soon stalled. On extracting the code, I found my problem was the EGR valve (no surprise there ) so I removed it and gave it a thorough clean with carb cleaner. Refitted it and went for a drive and the car was running better than it has for a long time. Marvelous I thought. Then two days later it was back to it's old rough self, so I thought I'd bite the bullet and buy a new one. Ordered one Tuesday night and drove home from work on Wednesday and the car was running fine again and still is. I think I'll probably change it anyway now I've bought one as otherwise I expect it will be playing up in a few weeks again. So why do astra's have such problems with EGR valves. Are the valves just badly made or what?

Simply because people never clean them out reqularly enough (it's best to do them annually)

Well I think I'll clean the new one out regularly. Don't want to have to fork out for any more

I've always found it strange that Haynes Manuals have always recommended an annual clean out of the EGR, but VX dealers don't.

But then again, who likes to give you big bills??
