    Crashed a Smart Car Today!!

Just had a fender bender in one of works Smart Cars... Kinda my fault, car in front put on the brakes hard and the smart just skidded under braking i the wet... It was a low speed accident and everyone's OK, Smart car needs a couple of panels but the Pug 106 I hit infront will need a rear bumper and the towbar bent down..

Ah well, lucky it was not the Astra ( although IT would not have skidded!!! )..

Here is a pic.. The Smart Car came off very lightly compared to the Pug although it was a very small impact.... The only damage to the Smart really is the big plastic thingy you see hanging and a few small cracks in the bottom panel..

Note to everyone!!!! Smart Cars do not stop on a wet road quickly!!

for a little car they are pretty strong.

we have got one at work and one of our lads hit the works gate with it and it just bounced off with no damage. there is a beifit to having plastic body pannels.

Interesting - I thought all smarts had ABS.

All the panels of the smart car are made of plasitc and can be replaced very easily but the safety cell itself is absolutely solid - they did test where they crashed one into a wall at 70mph and it was completely intact, could still open the doors etc. They did the same with a corsa and it crumbled to bits. One of the things that changed my views on them.

The do.. That still does not stop the buggers skidding in the wet.. They are so light, wet weather is dangerous if you need to brake hard..

This is true, it might not crumble but theres not a lot to absorb the impact. Still - they aint as much of a death trap as I originally thought.

I'd rather the car crumble a bit first before it got to the cage absorbing anything....as imo....hitting something solid in a smart car means the car wont absorb most of the impact....just you inside will stop dead with the car probably giving you serious whiplash or internal injuries possibly....thats just my opinion though.
