Unhappy Progressive whining coming from under bonnet

    Hi guys,

started the car up about an hour ago and it was making a strange whining noise from under the bonnet that becomes louder and higher when pressing the acelerator. I stopped a short while later to see if I could locate the problem but, due to the fact I really no nothing about engines, all I could work out was that the sound is coming from behind the main engine block and to the left near the cam belt area?? I'm really worried about as there are no warning lights on on the dash? Any help appreciated greatly. Should I stop driving it?

my 03 1.8 SRi does this when it's really cold, only for a few seconds. Posted about it a while a go but no replies. put it down to just being cold, had it for a year and a half now with no problems.

Could just be the aux belt rubbing, or the alternator whining.
If its not causing any problems I wouldn't worry too much provided your cambelt has been changed at the appropiate times.

i had a whine on my v6, the more the gas pedal was pushed the louder and nicer it was - then the next day at 4000 revs the cam belt snapped - one of the tensioners had seized and the whine was the belt travelling around the seized tensioner which eventuallay wore the belt to the point it split. it may not be the case on yours but worth a look - if your cambelt was changed were the tensioners also done

i'd stop driving it, most likely your cam belt if it hasn't been changed...... if it has, it would be that they didn't replace the rollers on the cam belt...
