    Engine Ticking?

My engine is progressively ticking louder and louder over the last couple of months. Just been serviced and its still there so you guys are the last resort.

At idle the engine tick tocks like a clock but louder and faster, its annoying me now and id like to get rid of the noise.

Does anyone else car tick loudly when idle.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this.

First noticed it at the beginning of the year. Took it to the garage - head gasket had to be changed. Timing belt changed in June. Still ticks away.

    1999 Astra 1.4 16V 75K on the clock.

My mate has the same car as mine but his doesn't tick. Same mileage but his is a year younger.

    Any suggestions please.

Maybe the tappets mate. Does it go away when heated up?

Also where is the ticking coming from? If its near the cambelt area (left side) go to a garage and get the water pump checked.

I had the water pump and timing belt changed two months ago.

The noise is coming from the left hand size as your standing infront of the engine.

Its only noticable when idle driving along.

Tappets - are they hydraulic or manual on the Astra does anyone know.

I was sure they were mainly hydraulic.
But i have heard there is a valve near the air box that can make a similar noise and that would be at the left hand side.

Not sure if its the EGR or the Idle Control Vave....

I think there has been loads spoke about the EGR on this site i might have a search around and see what i can come up with.

The car running ok. 76k miles on the clock. I drove my mates new car at the weekend also 99 Astra like mine and his felt firmer newer and his had 55k miles on the clock.

    Doubt its the EGR,
Could be the fuel vapour cannister (not sure if thats exactly what its called) haven't got my haynes handy but I think its a small metal cannister located around the back of the airbox near the suspension mount. Its a carbon cannister designed to absorb fuel vapours or something.
Someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon to explain no doubt.

My Z20LET ticks similar to this, high on the left side behind the airbox. There is (what i think is) an air line there which vibrates at the same tempo as the tick if I put my fingers on it.

I have been doing alot of motorway driving lately 650+ miles per week.

I didnt drive the car over the weekend and the ticking seems to be going away.

    Keep the fingers crossed.

Am not so concerned when i read other people with the same problems, its probably just a sound from the engine.

Depending where the ticking is coming from,

i had a ticking, sounded like it was coming from underneath the engine (hard to explain) i really noticed the ticking when i would drive past caars and stuff with my window open, faster revs, faster ticking,

The problem with my car was some bolts had sheard off (My explination here)
The whole post here about ticking engine here

(You said the ticking sounds from the left) I've heard it can be a clip at the back of the airbox if clip not properly secured

    Hope u get it sorted!
