Sounds like the power steering pump is faulty. Sometimes they usually right themselves.

    BTW it's whine, not wine

No idea on cost - it's an electro/hydraulic pump, so the fault could be in a whole host of places - from a dodgey connector to something more serious.

It might be worthwhile checking the fluid level tho - it's on the rear right on the engine bay, somewhere below the big fuse box. And there's a inbuilt dipstick on the cap

    Hi all

checked the fluid level and its just above min . is that ok or you think that could be the problem ?

also when i start car the wheel is stiff for a few turns then it finally goes back to normal , but the whine still comes from engine even when the wheel frees up a bit

ok, it sounds like your alternator is up the shoot - think the PS runs off the alternator

mine did this first thing in the mornings when my alternator was whining and worn out.

I'd get the power steering fluid topped up. My old Mk4 whined and whistled, and topping the fluid up sorted it out. It wasn't even at the minimum, it was around the half mark.

You can top it up yourself, just get a wee bottle of ATF. The reservoir is down below the fuse boxes against the bulkhead.

Don't use that word (alternat*r!)... If it is, your car won't drive very far, I
managed 4 miles of the battery before my steering decided to go solid!!!

But as above, could well be lack of fluid...

120amp alt is around £136 new from vxl + vat + service charge of £35 if
    yours is different (100amp)!
