    Cooling fan problem??

    Hi,
    I have a problem with my Astra Mk4 SRI (year 2000) heating?cooling.
Basically on a cold day the fan works as soon as I start the car as you would expect. However on a really hot day (when I need it most!) the fan fails to start not until perhaps 10mins later whilst driving which is most annoying! Any ideas? Is the fan a viscous coupling?
    Thanks for any advice.

sorry mate - not technical enough to know what a viscous coupling is, but sounds like either the thermostat has gone or the fan has loose connection/broken wires.

I have a 2000 SRi too, and my fan rarely comes on.... ever, until I am sat in traffic, or have been ragging the hell out of it. temp gauge never goes much above the 12 o'clock point. (or much below tbh).
    0-60 in 6.5 secs and 48mpg- winner!

No viscous coupling on the Mk4's (G's) mate.

Do you have air con? i.e. the fan that is on the front of the air con rad? or not? if so which one is it that is coming on?

If not, then your fan shouldn't come on as soon as you start the engine. It should only come on when it gets above around 87 degrees.

Sounds like the sensor that is at fault....one attached to the fan itself.

Thanks for the replies to date,

I do have air con. It would be my understanding that the fan for internal heating & cooling should work at any temperature? Even when the air con is switched on nothing comes through. I suspect a faulty wire as you say becauce it works intermittantly but only after the car has been driven for about 10mins.
