    Pinking?? Astra 1.8 (X18XE1)

    Hey Guys,

I noticed like apinging noise coming from my car yesterday.
Only under load, between about 2000 and 3500RPM it sounds like the engine is pinking?? Surely the ECU detects this via the knock sensor and retards ignition???

How bad is this? Should I worry?

"Pinking" as it's called in the UK is caused by pre-ignition of the fuel/air mix, by something other than the spark plug. It's not good and it the worst cases can melt pistons - I'm not saying this is the case here, but it can happen.

I'd suggest the knock sensor is the first place to look at, as this "listens" for pinking and then instructs the ECU to adjust the timing and/or fuel/air mix.

Best to get it looked at.

Thanks, edited.. There's controversy here as to whether its called pinging or pinking...

Ok so if the sensor is faulty the ECU won't know about it??
    No fault codes or anything?

I'll just take it to a dealer and get it checked.
    Are they pricey??

The ECU should know about it, but if the sensor is faulty, but it might not be faulty enough to register, but stil cause a problem with running - if that makes sense. either way if the engine is pinking then there must be a fault.

Crappy petrol will can also cause it to pink. I've no idea of the price, sorry.

BTW it's called pinking in the UK and IIRC pinging in the US - so it all depends on where you get your "english" from.

We South African's are funny with "English". Well I DEFINATELY don't speak American English... So Pinking it is then!!

Ok I think I'd better take it to Opel..

If it's not doing it too bad, then it should be OK- but don't go doing any long trips .

Ya I hope so too... Wonder what the worst case scenario would be? (Excluding broken pistons etc)
