    K&N on Mk4 1.8

    Hey Guys.

I did some searching and it seems K&N's work for some guys and cause other's Air Mass Meter's to break..

    So what's the deal with a K&N???
I have one, but I'm a bit nervous to put it in.
I have de-baffled the box already.

I'm assuming you're using the K&N panel filter, and not the 57i induction kit?

I've had a K&N panel filter in 3 of my own Vauxhalls (Mk4 1.6 8v, Corsa 1.2 16v, Mk4 2.0DTi) and had no problems. A few mates have them in their Astras as well, again no problems.

One of my housmates just cleaned the K&N panel filter for the first time that I had in my first Mk4. I used it for 1 year and 32,000 miles, and he's been running it for 18 months and over 50,000 miles. So, first cleaning after 82,000 isn't bad. It was quite dirty.

stick a cone on there.. only kills the afm if its over oiled.. it will be over oiled out of the box though, so soak it in warm water for a while, then run it under the tap for as long as you can be arsed.

Put in warm place for far too long till its completely dry...

    Then you'll be fine.

A/S members have fitted literally hundreds of things and problems are very rare.

Fitting a K&N will don't damage the AFM in itself - any damage is usually down to over-oiling the element. The surplus oil gets drawn onto the AFM wires and kills it that way.

The come correctly pre-oiled - don't add any more!!!

Ok so it shouldn't cause a problem then..
*IF* it does over oil the wires on the AMM, can't I just spray with carb cleaner to clean it all off??

    Exactly, they come oiled.

As I said, the one I cleaned last weekend had been in there for 82k. The K&N cleaning kit has full instructions. Basically dose with the cleaner, leave to soak, rince with water, leave to dry, and then reoil as per instructions.

Unless you live in the desert, or drive serious milage, the filter should go on for years.

Problem with the AFM is the wire is heated. The oil gets on there, which makes the wire overheat and burn out.

You won't know this has happened, till it breaks.
