    2nd car....

Think I may have found something to drive so I can keep the astra for special occasions.

My question here however is..... insurance.

When my dad started dabbling with having a 2nd car he found that he had to start building up his NCB from scratch.

Any advice people? (on the above and anything generally involving owning more than one car)

    Cheers,

    Steve

to have 2 cars most insurance companies do make u start from scrath with the NCB so u have 2 running at the same time,

but i think there are certain companies that will do it, or at least if u ring ure current co they may let u start a 2nd policy carrying ure current NCB,

I have a few policies. the main ones are for the astra full NCB and now one with 3 years NCB which I started a while back, as I knew my astra would always be a weekend car and may need a everyday car.

I first got the insurance for the 2nd car with HIC, and they asked my history, I explained I had full NCB with another policy and 3 years on my van policy, so they gave me the discount to the equiverlant of 2 years NCB straight away. They also took into account what clubs I was in etc etc even though it was a ford P100 So yeah you do have to start again but ring around and get a decent quote some companies are better than others. Iirc the 2.0 Petrol P100 full comp was only £390.00 for a first year new insurance I dont think that was bad at all.

Some companies will mirror your your NCB for a second car, I enquired about that a while ago, but I guess I was looking to do it the other way round, insure something from scatch but to use as the weekend car

I had my full NCB mirrored onto a 2nd vehicle, hence the insurance cost on a Mk3 1.4i Astra went from £995 to £300 when I did that!!

You could try www.chrisknott.co.uk they did this for me, also HIC did this arrangement aswell.

Just dont have a claim on the 2nd car, as they wont allow you to mirror it anymore - cost me £700 to pay back the insurance company before they would allow me to mirror it again.

ZS it was the sierra one, and yes it certainly did rust LOL, I never ever drove the car it was just a cheap free car (paid £1 for it of a mate) to insure to start the 2nd policy up and get a second set of no claims.

Thanks Chirs, I'll give Chris Knott a try. Oh and good old HIC too of course.

I went for a quote with my current company today and they were unable to give me 2nd car discount.... the quote on a £100 banger came to £890! (3rd party)

As Martin says, I think the problem is that I want to insure a car for work rather than a car for the weekends.... it seems to confuse some company databases.
