    Splitting the center console.....

Has anyone split the center console of an Astra Mk4..

This is the place I want to split it:

I know it is just joined on with blobs ( very technical term ) of plastic.. I was just wondering if anyone had done it and did it go well?

The reason I am asking is I have a top section that has a tv screen in it but the bottom section is a bit tatty and I ws gona replace it with a good one I have...

Sounds dangerous. Will probably lose rigidity. You dont want it to rattle or worst case fall off!

if you're going to do it, this is how i'd go about it:

hacksaw neatly and carefully at the points you want to seperate with a fine blade hacksaw.

i think you might be left with "hollow" tubes - if not it's time to break out that drill.

insert stiffening rods (metal preferably, but plastic would suffice into the hollows/drill holes and secure them in place on one side with JB weld/araldite.

test fit the top half, make any final adjusments and then jb weld/araldite the parts together, and be sure to wipe away any excess before it sets. (might be an idea to use a little white spirit to make sure no residue is left.

i think that'd work, but whether you think it might just be easier to paint the centre console or buy another etc i don't know

How the console looks from behing

Here are pics of the inside of the console..

And here is how I assue it is attached:

The circles in red appear to be melted plastic dowels on the silver part going into holes on the black part.. The parts in blue are rods from the black bit sliding into the silver part ( probably for stability )... In short, it is two parts just stuck together with melted plastic...

My plan is to melt the plastic blobs ( the circled ones ) just enough so the black part will come off and just superglue it onto another nice shiny plastic bit ( or even use the remaining plastic and glue!! )...

Althought I have an idea how I am giong to do/attempt it, I was just wondering if anyine has done it before.. If not and I do manage to get it done, I will post pics ( as well as the finished article of an in car TV/DVD ).

    Thumbs Up

Ah well, to answer the question I asked.... Yes it can be done with no problems...

Just remove the blobs with a flathead screwdriver and it comes off..
