If your looking at the new Astra H 1.7CDTI? IMO take a book to read whilst you wait for the car to get to 70. Don't attempt to use lane 3 of the motorway as embresment will be caused. Honestly I had one for a few days. Brand new lease car whilst mine was being fixed. Turbo was tiny and did next to nothing. Pulled out to over take a moron who was allergic to lane 1 he saw me do it and began accelerating. I pushed it even harder and after willing the car forward and hitting 75mph I pulled back into lane 2 as the Astra had nothing to give. Even off the line my grandmother passed me in her electric cart. The moral of the storey. Take a 3 day test drive and judge for yourself but me I'd be investing mine in the 2.0 version. As for hybrids, just more to go wrong.

i've had a weeks use of a 2.0 dti van (sportive- think theyre all the same engine?) and was pretty impressed. the torque is lovely, hardly need to change gear, just float around in 5th! power wise it was not bad at all, would do 100 up the motorway no problem

That'd be why it was dead slow and stop. Diesels are tighter than a duck's arse when they're new. Give it a few thousand miles and an oil change and I bet it'd go a lot better.

Even my petrol Corsa was nearly undrivable for the first 1000 miles, gave it an oil change and away it went. There's a hill on the M2 out of Belfast, and the Corsa when new would only do 60 in 3rd up it flat out. By 1000 miles it'd go up it at 80 in 5th. Now at 14k on the clock it'll do it at 90 in 5th no problems.

the 2.0DTI (100BPH) engine is the best in the van.

as for high mileage its a diesel if its looked after it'll last forever.

the 1.6 isn't really torquey enough to pull a fully loaded van and the 1.7 is a bit slow on accelleration
