    Urgent help needed.

My car is running REALLY bad, ad idle the engine is shaking like a washing maching and the ride is jerky. Its not the EGR valve because I cleaned it just before the problem started.
Checked the sparks and they seem ok although I don't know how to tell what the problem is. No engine management light.
I did install a K&N panel filter a few weeks ago, it wasn't very oily but maybe it has killed my AMM?

Any help would be great, just to top it off I'm coming down with the flu!

Its an Astra Mk4 with an X18XE1 engine.

    Thanks

mmm does sound like a killed AFM maybe, or could be a blocked injector? it could also be the idle control valve. Dont assume that it isn't the EGR valve just cause its clean, its still a possilbilty!

    Things I would try first:

See if you can borrow someones AFM as a test on yours

Clean the throttle body and Idle control valve.

    Thanks for the reply.

The idle control valve/TB is clean. I did go crazy with the carb cleaner when cleaning the EGR, could I have killed it? tried disconnecting the plug to no avail.

    over kill with CC shouldn't of done anything. . . . .

Try making sure everything is plugged in and all the connections are good.

Does it run rough all the time, all through the rev range? any trouble starting it?
Does it sound like it is only running on 3 cylinders?
At idle, are the revs steady?

It does seem like its running on 3, I don't know how to check that all the cylinders are firing.

The revs are not steady they bounce usually between 800 rpm - 1100 rpm., thanks again, not really in a position to check anything anymore. I will try borrowing my neighbours AMM.

    Thanks

Just replaced the AFM, its cured the violent shaking of the engine but the other problem remains, its idling high 1200-1500 rpm and the needle is constantly moving around. Also seems to be heating up very quickly (not gone much above 90 on the gauge) just gets up to that temp much quicker than it used to do.
Anyone have any ideas, I can't believe how a car which was running so well can turn into a piece of crap virtually overnight.
    No engine management light.
    Help would be greatly appreciated

Right I think this case if finally closed, so just incase anyone comes across it in future I'll finish it off.

Problem: Extremely rough running engine, idle flucating wildly, no engine management light

Partial solution: Replace the Mass air flow meter - The rough running was solved, the idle was still fluctuating and idle was running high

Final solution: Sticking throttle cable, bit of grease on the throttle valve spring, reset the throttle cable position.

    Problems solved!

    Thanks for the help Darryl
