Stupid question, but need to know...

By having air con on, does it use up petrol?

i thought it would use up the battery more but dont know how petrol can produce air con, unless it was to run the motors or something

please can someone let me know.

    thanks

    al

Yes it sure does, your fuel consumption will increase with the air con switched on.

The air con refrigerant pump is driven off the ancillary belt, you know the one that runs the alternator. If the pump is flowing liquid round the system this creates resistance which obviously requires power to run, putting more load on the engine

I thought it was about 10% power you lose when using the air con and subsequently you use about 10% more fuel. Although if you’re driving at a decent speed then it’s more efficient and economical to use the air con, rather than winding the windows down or a sunroof, as the wind resistance slows your car down. I read somewhere the best method is to put the fans on full and only use the air con if this isn’t sufficient.

but then, living in Scotland - its not really an issue

Uses a fair amount of electrons, too. Most a/c pumps use magnetic clutches. This obviously then puts even more strain on the engine.

    Standard - but Nice.
