    Question Air Con Question

Just curious really, why is it when your idleing with the air con on that the fans will cut out for a short while then start up again?. Is it some sort of protection for the compressor or something to do with the load on the battery or alternator?. I was under the impression that the fans needed to be running all the time to keep the air cool, but saying that is it a way of regulating the temperature?.

Dont know but would like to......lol.

    Cheers.

It's not necessarily Air Con related.

Even non air con cars the fan comes on and of...the fan will have a temperature sender, which switches the fan on when required.

This is air con related as my air con fan (on front of the rad) switched on and off every 30 secs or so.

I guess it's because that's how often it needs to run.

Yer thanks, I know the main fan comes on to cool the engine down at a set point then turns off, I just thought the air con fans ran all the time and was curious.

    Rubbish.

The condensor fan comes on to get rid of the heat thats been taken out of the cabin. When the R134a returns from gas back into liquid, its dispersed through the condensor and the fan gets it out.

A/c doesnt 'make' cold air. All it does is remove heat, and the only element your left with is cold. Its is regulated by a thermal expansion valve, which controls the temperature that the fluid enters the evaporator, as with all a/c systems, if the temp isnt regulated, your interior would freeze!

    Hope that answers the question.

Just to satisfy your curiosity further, go and see which way the fan turns when the a/c is on and i bet it blows outwards!
