    Check Engine light

    Hi,
I guess this topic was discussed before.
Anyway, my check engine light just turned on. The red light engine icon on the dash. It usually turns on but after a few restarts or a couple of days, the light turns off.
What is this? Something wrong with the car? I haven't asked my dealer (stealer) yet and I am afraid of unnecessary expenses.

    Thanks.

They'll charge you between £30-60 just to tell you what the problem is, and then be prepared to be bent over a barrel and......well you know the rest. Best thing to do is see if anyone else can run a TECH 2 for you cheaper and then go from there, it may be something minor which can be repair cheaply or you may find a big dent in you're wallet.

If you're car is pre-2000 you might be able to check the engine codes yourself, but since you haven't put any details about you're car its difficult to comment.

If there's a diag socket under the trim by the handbrake I think you can read codes. Short pins 5&6 I think to flash faul codes. Look a www.topbuzz.co.uk for more info.

    Standard - but Nice.

Might not work on newer cars like the 2001 model. Look for the plug under the trim and see if it has the correct pins. If so then its a piece of cake to read the codes, that will give a good starting point from which to try and diagnose the problem.

I'm not sure on this but I think most garages should be able to read the code on this car as I think most cars from 2001 onwards are OBDII compliant. You could also get your own reader like these:

    http://www.gendan.co.uk/viewproduct....oduct=CREADOBD

    http://www.gendan.co.uk/viewproduct.php?product=STNISO

Hopefully someone can shed a bit more light on this, but either way, regardless of the model, your not restricted to TechII.

My ECU light appears from time to mine, pretty rarely.

But I took it to VX to find out what was wrong and they ran it through Tech 2. However, they couldn't find a fault so didn't charge me!
