Good choice first of all, I am looking at getting one of these soon. Power is roughly 147bhp, not sure about consumption etc, but it does pull well. How much you looking to spend?

I have a 2.2 coupe. Good performance, but the engine needs worked, all the power seems to be above 3500-4000rpm. I think the fuel economy is quite poor, I average about 30mpg.

Strange my brochure says 135 MPH and 0-60 8.2. Although hardly a lot of difference! Does seem quicker than this though.

Brilliant car. There is loads of power above 3500, but keep it below that and your MPG won’t be too bad yet you will still make good progress. Makes a change coming from a diesel where the power dropped off at 3000. (But we don’t buy a 2.2 for MPG anyway). One of the best 4 pots sound wise as standard IMHO.

    Things to look out for:

Rattly dash, although I guess it can be sorted
Wind noise from front drivers side
    Alarm sounder can go wrong
I know there are other things but every car has their issues.

Won’t be long though before you will want a GSI front bumper, new rear lights, xenon’s, airbox mod, panel filter, etc etc!

The 2.2 is a beauty of an engine - either stick it in 3rd absolutely flies (all the way up to 80ish and beyond) or leave it in 5th and it's quite happy doing 30.

So flexible and such an easy drive - it makes your clutch leg lazy

as for coupes - i've no idea cos i've a hatch

The 2.2 is chain driven, some of the early ones suffered from snapped chains due to lubrication problems. Do a search on here and you should come across some of the old posts that talk about the ways to spot the earlier and the later modified 2.2s

Great engine though, sounds lovely and it pulls nicely
