    Question 1.6 Potential?

    Hi,

I keep seeing posts where people are saying that the 1.6 16v has the most potential for tuning..... can anyone explain why this is and what exactly is the potential??

    BTW I drive a 1.6 16v Sxi 2001, hence the interest

there is a lot of potential in that engine mate.

basic stuff, like derestricting the airbox, vectra c air intake, performance panel filter, and a full exhaust system will all make it more responsive and give a few more horses. however they will make the torque curve much smoother and remove any flat spots.

you can get a really good throttle body kit for this car - think it adds about 30bhp iirc, made by diablas it'll set you back just over a grand I think. You can also turbo the 1.6_16v fairly succesfully - which would be awesome, its been done by one owner on here - Jingus ? and I think he got that 100bhp engine up to 190 ? anyway all this is off the top of my head and prob a bit wrong but I'm sure plenty people will post answeres after mine! lol

what have you done so far performance wise?

I have derestricted the air box, K&N panel filter and a Peco rear box. Am thinking of getting the veccy C intake and the Remus centre pipe

cool - def get the vec C intake pipe - think both parts will only end up costing about £19 so its worthwhile. the centre pipe will make the car sound meatier and will help with the torque.

when the first 1.6 16v was first developed (the C16XE) it was Lotus who did most of the work. Initially they delivered it back to Vauxhall with 150bhp. Mr Vauxhall in his wisdom decided they couldn't have a 1.6 overshadowing the bigger 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines. So they fitted an overcomplicated and restrictive inlet manifold which strangled the engine down to 109bhp.

Replace the standard inlet manifold and you should see gains of 20-30bhp. If your pockets are big enough SBD will be able to get over 230bhp from your engine. Still NA and it will rev to 10,000rpm

drop the car and about £15K off at SBD

the cheaper option for the 20-30bhp gain is the Mantzel powerbox. This would usually cost about a grand. But i believe Mantzel recently folded so their powerboxes will be starting to get quite rare.....

what do you want to use the car for as a day to day car ???
if so going the 200bhp will make it a hard car to drive ie all the power at the top of the rev range
for road use i would go with a full exhaust system 5 to 10bhp then i would have a look for a K&N airfilter with the vectra pipes £14 for pipes, £35 for filter then a new inletmanifold will sort out the power for road use look for the power box's on www.ebay.de cossvaux sell a dbilas inlet manfold
