    What engine?

    Hi,

I'm thinking about getting an Astra. I've currently got a Cav "N" 2L GLS Ecotec. I broke the cam belt (didn't change at it's 38K interval, you've been warned, change them!), I've fixed the engine, luckily I was going slowly when it broke and just bent 2 exhaust valves. Anyway It's up for MOT soon and if it's going to be semi expensive to get through, I'll scrap it.

So I'm thinking what next. I'm not mad about the base Astras, No offence, so I think for my money (upto 2K) I should be able to get an "R" (91-98 (MK3?)). As I understand it there is an Ecotec 1.6 16v twin cam, is this much the same as the 2L I have currently? I had a few problems with mine (lambda sensor, cam sensor, Idle control valve), is this much the same for the Astra version?

    OK wish list

    Colour coded bumpers

Electric windows, heated mirrors, PAS, ABS.

    maybe aircon, not essential.

Any advice about what I should get, what's the most reliable engine available for the (91-98 (MK3?)).?

Any fuel economy/BHP figures would also be good, I do about 16K/year, so don't really want a gas gusler, although I found the 2L tolerable.

Or maybe I should go for an Escort, they seem to be cheaper?

ok for that money u can choose between any mk3 nearly.

i had a 1.6 16v GLS & CDX and there fantastic cars get all the tits and switchs and old people tend to have them so you CAN find a mint example.

the 1.6 16v (x16xe) is a cracking engine and with a few mods can out perform the 2ltr ecotec & red top. Vauxhall had to put restrictors in to slow it down & for emisions.

fuel and bhp are fine as 1.6 16v is 107bhp standard. any more pm me!

1.6 16v's will not feel like the XEV in your Cavalier. BUT, the 1.6's respond very well to modification.

When Vauxhall first started development of the 1.6 16v, they were initially producing bhp not far off of that of an XE. They did tone them down for production, fitting restricted inlet manifolds, exhaust and not such a free flowing head.

Now, with not a huge amount (and you can do this in stages) of money, there are a few things you can do to them. Manztel make a very good replacement inlet manofild. You can also get decent 4-2-1 exhaust manifolds and some headwork...basically undoing all the things that Vauxhall did!

Pretty reliable engines although some suffered from sticky valves which do cause a major ball ache.

Escorts of that era are cheap for a reason. Woeful engines and bad suspension.

The 1.6 16v Escort is about the best of the bunch, and it's only 90hp and has next to no torque. You really do need to rev the tits off it to get anywhere. The last model Escrots had serious issues with wonky bushes in the front suspension. They rattle all the time, even with a full set of new bushings. Oh, and don't even start me on the brakes.

Lot of rotten ones appearing now too. Even late N and P reg ones are starting to look hanging. Rear arches just turn into digestive biscuits.

Have actually seen crusty R reg ones, a few of them too....'R' reg...you wouldn't think so would you. The year the 'G' came out.
