    Tesco's 99 Ron Petrol......

As im sure you are all aware various Tesco's stores around the country have started to replace their LRP petrol with 99Ron Super Unleaded Petrol. There are a number of other forums that have been keeping tabs on the fuel and posting up various their thoughts and opinions.

We have a good number of higher spec cars which are either re-mapped or tuned to run on better quality fuel so I was thinking that we should perhaps be keeping tabs on this fuel situation as well. Tesco's have already stated that this is a trial period for the fuel in question and that sales during this time will denote wehter it is to be made available permenantly.

So - who has had a crack with the stuff ?? Anyone got any initial thoughts ??

I'm not going to try it. 99 rons all very good but its still cheap tesco petrol which I dont think has all the additives like detergent that keeps your engine free from coke deposits etc. I'll be sticking to the likes of shell and texeco purly fo that reason.

Over here, Tesco's petrol is the best, most consistant fuel you can buy. Everything else, apart from Sainbury's (which is crap compared to Tesco) is brought in from S. Ireland, so can be very variable.

I tend to use Tescos ordinary unleaded, and put in a BP Ultimate tankful every month or so.

Just read on Scoobynet that theres only about 8 Tesco's stores with the 99RON fuel and none in my area and I agree with Lightning Coupe, my car never ran well on the standard "supermarket 95ron" compared to the BP regular unleaded 95ron.

That was exactly what my initial thoughts were !! I have been keeping tabs with this on various forums though and it seems that this petrol is proving very popular. The Scooby guys that run the knock link program say that it gives very similar readings to Optimax if not slightly better which mean the fuel itself is good quality 99 ron fuel. The only down side is that no-one is 100% sure if the petrol is good quality in terms of Additives and extras that make Shell's optimax petrol so popular.

It's very easy to tell when you have a decent tank of fuel in my GSI because there is a noticable difference in performance. The car picks up quicker and acceleration feels smoother and sharper.

At the end of the day it going to come down to the extra's that go into the petrol because it's a good 4-5p cheaper than Optimax in my area (86.9 compared to 91.9) and certainly gives similar if not better performance than Optimax. Just need to find out if it's any good for the car in the long run.
