configuring HD and CD drive on the IDE

whats the best way to set up the HD and the DVD drive on the IDE cable and what gets master and what gets slave?

i would assume the HD gets master and the dvd gets slave

    any opinions?

    makes no difference i believe.

If you only have two IDE devices, then I think the best option would be to have them connected to different IDE sockets on your mother board. (I presume that you have two IDE sockets on the mobo.)

If you want to put them on the same cable, then HDD Master and DVD slave should be fine. Just make sure you set the jumpers correctly and configure the bios appropriatly. (You may be able to get away with setting both devices to Cable Select (aka "CS") and set the bios to autodetect. It's the most fool proof, but takes a fraction more time to boot up.)

I may be wrong, so if anyone else knows better, please correct me!
    Cheers.

with ide every device operates at the speed of the slowest. so ideally put your HDD(s) on seperate connectors to cd's/dvd's which operate at a slower speed (66MB/s as opposed to hdd's (100/133 MB/s) if i remember. Put hdd's on IDE0 and CD's/DVD's on IDE1, no need to use other than CS really unless you particularly want to have a device in a particular position.
