You need a digital camera that has an extended exposure time to make the most out of night photography.

/\ Yup. That's what I do. Leave the shutter open for about 1.5secs or so (more or less depending on the light) to get a decent exposure. You can do this on Digital or Film. Much easier on a digi though because you can see the results immediatly and try again if it's under or over exposed. Oh yeah, and dont forget to use a tripod.

yeah a tripod is what i was going to say, the camera needs to be kept very still. Thats the problem i have, i love photography but i dont have a steady hand which annoys me.

If you don't have a tripod, shrink yourself down and use the ground:

I took some night pics last saturday, came out too dark aswell...gonna try longer exposure.

I took these at Xmas, while I was messing about with long exposure:

Short (like ISO50 i think) with flash: (notice how the wall is illuminated by the flash, but the lights dont look very good)

Long (like 2secs) with no flash: (now you cant see the wall, but the lights look great, well if you like that sort of thing! The guy does it every year and collects for charity. I didnt have my tripod with me for this one, I had to stand very still and hope for the best. It would look as bright, but sharper if I had used one.)

I might try and take some of my car when it gets dark later.. see how they come out.

Depending on the weigh of the camera, get a nice tripod. There's nothing worse than having this light tripod that sways and rocks about.

Long shutter will solve your problem but watch out that you don't over do the exposure. The grainy picture you see is because the camera (which I presume is set to auto everything) will increase the ISO for greater sensitivity and thus increase the noise (as in the grainy weird colours which makes black not so black).

I find it quite funny when people walk about with their pocket cameras (nothing wrong with them) and they use a flash at night to light up the people but fail to think that the flash won't exactly light up the background.

Here's my photo gallery site for those interested that I took during the New Year's Eve of 04-05. CLICK HERE but feel free to browse the whole gallery.
