    mile muncher wanted

what cars are good mile munchers? i went for a job interview with airbus (the builders of that new double decker plane) this morning and if i get the job it means driving 50miles ther 50miles back every day.

500miles / week ....petrol for the astra .......£50 / week
    2000miles / month ..................................£200 / month
    24000miles / year ...................................£2400 / year

cost of petrol plus the depreciation and servicing cost are going to make it very expensive to do in the astra so i'm thinking of a second car.

must be very reliable, small engine or diesel or even LPG and low insurance group (under 5).

ideas please no matter how ugly

well diesel anyway. i probably get a pug/citreon for that money and they make good strong diesels and are cheap to buy and run.

there is no way on earth you could do 100 miles a day in a 106, thats insain, you'd turn up to work pissed off everyday. as its cramped, noisey and slow as hell.

i did 500 miles a week in my last job and i would recomend something at least as comfy as an astra.

5 serise d sounds like a good plan to me

What about a diesel Merc....you can pick them up fairly cheaply.
Should be able to find a well serviced one.

I reckon a 1.4 MPI astra around a K or L. If you get a 5 door GLS or CD it will have e/w, c/l, pas, sunroof, electric aerial, velour trim. The engines seems to last I had my last one up to 130k miles and it was OK. Plus, with a 1.4 your road tax is cheap and they are not too bad on fuel either.

just spotted thats its to be group 5 insurance or less - your not going to get a merc or a beemer for that. So you are looking at a small hatch really. 306 diesel?
