Just remove the two horizontal bolts to get at the pollen filter, not the vertical one (far left on your photo).

I've no idea what the wire is tho

Yep, As Ffoeg says...undo those two bolts and the panel should pull out revealing the filter !

...and I have no idea what the wire is...some kind of sensor for temp maybe if it's got air con.

The filter is a paper panel filter - very similar to the engine air filter. I'm not sure if it will cure the smelly problem, but it will help with demisting.

Do a search as I'm 100% sure the smellies have been discussed before. Unless someone is less lazy than me today.

Yeh you need to undo the two bolt as mentioned then unclip the cips at both the top and bottom of the rectancular panel (they have plastic dowels so be carefull tou don't try and force it).

As for the filter, I don't think they are that expensive from Vaux. I changed mine the other week there and my box was full of small leaves and crap....? It either couldn't have been sealed properly or they had got in form somewhere...???

we got 5 astra Gs in the family and they ALL do that
when the A/C is on , its fine, fresh
but as soon as u turn it off, a horrible and unbearable smell is there for quite a long time!
soon as u turn it back on, its gone
lemme know if u sort it
I can understand if its the filter but my own astra is a year old.. and it happened when i bought it so i dont think its that
