    Computer help required

I have the in-laws PC to update - remove the old Win98 and install xp.

It needed redoing as on start-up some clumsily removed progs caused some errors - and as it was a 2nd hand pc there is a lot of junk on there that need not be.

Now, I've installed XP , thought it didnt work and installed it again. This time it took forever - and I think what its doing is installing and not over-writing. So the pc memory is very low now.

Is there a way of completely wiping the momory and starting from scratch?
why do today what you can...... I'll finish this later

on the xp installer you get the option of chosing the disk to install on on that screen use the D key to delete all the partitions that are on the disk then press enter when all that's left in the list is "Unpartitioned Space" this will make XP re partition and re format the drive. PM if you need more help

Run XP setup and do as Simon said. XP does fdisk but in some cases leaves residue from the last installation on the drive, which you can't see but XP knows its there.

If it happens again it might be an idea to run FDISK manually then use XP setup

Make sure you boot from the XP CD itself when the computer starts up.

Don't even think about installing XP on a PC with less that 256MB of RAM it will run like a dog, Microsoft recommend a min of 128MB of RAM. If the PC is old enough to have Windows 98 installed on it I would suspect that it doesn't have the hardware requirments to support XP.
