Not the best of starts for the astra sport

In autoexpress this week the new astra sport (3dr H) has been put against the following cars:

    Citroen C4 coupe 1.6 VTR
Ford Focus Ti-VCT Zetec Climate (bloody mouth full!!)
    VW Golf 1.6 FSI S

    the astra used was:

    Astra Sport 1.6 SXI

Guess what the astra came last! With the Focus came first foloowied by the Golf then the citroen then the astra. However its not all bad from our point of view the comments on the astra were as follows:

If you rate looks highly the astra will fit the bill however its the most costly to run, least practical (I think they missed the point there) and rides too firmily. To finish off though autoexpress felt that the 'playing it safe' by the Golf and focus package will mean they lose sales to the astra and citroen.

Hopefully the VXR will rate more highly but I doubt it as the Golf is already proving a great package.

People will always slate vauxhalls, its an ongoing thing and it will never change! its been far to long since they made it to the top of the class..... personally i think the cavalier was the only car that was appreciated.

dont care how many gadgets or how spacious the C4 is - its french and i wouldnt go near one.

And the focus looks rank so its got to be the astra for me

Autoexpress misses the emphasis yet agian.

A/E never balances the weighting of the categories to the type of car they are examining - each category is rated out of 5 - but in, for example - the 3dr hatch market you dont mind boot space - then why score them out of 5?

One thing that I do have worries about auto express is there is little consideration on depreciation - and can understand why the golf is up there near the top - the new focus is an unknown - but I would anticipate the depreciation would be steep once the looks wain, the C4 is discounted from new heavily wont retain its value like the others. The astra - I see being between the golf and the focus - I bet AE dont.
why do today what you can...... I'll finish this later

oh and the golf is more than likely overpriced and underspecced, the build quality/interior is a step back from the mk4 imo and again the astra is a better looker.

I llike the look of the new focus I must admit, be suprised if the build quailty is as good as they say though, as I thought the astra H 5 dr I sat in was brilliant.

Paul the test fully takes into account depreciation and the astra is expected to lose more the the citroen !! The Astra is forecasted to lose more money than all of them

What twaddle......whoever drove the sportshatch (get it right Mr G, Vauxhall are very touchy about you calling it a 3H....its a sports hatch ), has cleare only looked at the Focus, we had both in and to say the Focus was dull and lifeless in comaprison is an understatement.
