    Z20LET advice please...

Having just sold the X20XEV Ecotec Astra GSi which went through 2 headgaskets in 18 months (one at 55k miles, then again at 74k), I am now the proud owner of a grown-up Zafira GSi Turbo which is fitted with the Z20LET engine as per the Astra GSi Turbo.

The cylinder heads look the same, and I've heard lots of other Ecotec owners complain of headgasket problems from around 60-70k, so I'm wondering if the LET versions suffer from the same problems.

At the mo, the car's only 2 years old, still under warranty, and has only done 23,000 miles, but given that I rack up miles at a fair old rate, I want to plan ahead, and know what's in store and when.

    So my questions are:
    1. Do the Z20LET engines suffer the same HG probs as the X20XEV?
    2. Any other problems to watch out for?
    3. What oil do people use in these engines?

Any gen would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Dave

    To answer your questions ....

    1. Not heard of any Z20let HG go as of yet. Not many have done that high mileage though, so not much info from what I have seen about any weakness

    2. Problems, not many. Fairly reliable motors if not fiddled with massively. Even then they can be tuned well and still retain reliability

    3. I always used 5W-40 Fully synth in mine, and never had any complaints.

You shouldnt have any problems head gasket wise, the Z20LET, minor water pump issues etc aside is a pretty reliable engine....if your worried about repiars outwith your warranty period then why not extend the warranty, for £30 a month Vauxahll will warranty the car, inc AA cover and inc servicing.

Cheers for the replies. Very helpful info. LordNikon, which brand of oil do you use in yours, and how many miles have you run up so far...?
& Dave, is that something you can do if you're the 2nd owner, and can you buy that at any dealer, or only the supplying dealer?

You can take it out no matter how many owners the car as had, and can be taken out at any dealer http://vauxhall.co.uk/masterfit/prod...AndPrice.jhtml that link there gives you all the info you need. And oil wise Id recommend using Vauxhalls own oil.

The oil they use at the dealer is fine, but Iwould recomend having it changed more regularly that the 20k miles vaux state, and you say you'll rack up the miles.

I get interim oil changes done every 6k, only costs £30

the head gaskets are metal so i doubt you will ever have any problems, an engine thats blowing head gaskets is unhealthy especially if its N/A
