    Computer problems...

Anyone ever had a Problem with windows XP where it Locks up restarts itself and goes to the XP Pro/Home Edition window and the blue bar scrolls for ages and then it restarts itself again and keep doign this constantly???

We had this problem last night and I'M gettin the blame as usual, and my Mother (she aint got a clue) is putting it down to Links posted on Forums as the source.. now Spybot search and destroy, Microsofts own Spware remover and AVG Anti Virus picked up nothing we are puzzled

Dad done some thing in System config and it came back to life then we done the Scans and it's running fine now but we would like to know what Caused it so we can prevent it happening again.. any help would be Aprreciated guys

    Thanks in advance!

(oh and I am in no way blaming anyone for posting Links to funny sites for any of this as all our Protection said the computer was clean and in my Dads mind and my mind the links were not the cause! Dont want an Argument started over the Nature/origin/content of these link)

windows XP runs fine until people come along and muck it up....

if you take the proper precautions, and look after it properly it will give you very few problems. I'm getting tired of hearing people complaining about how buggy XP is when it's actually a very good OS...

but that aside, can you find out exactly waht your dad did in sys config? that would go a long way to determining what caused it

I'm not complaining about it Rusty it's actually far more stable than earlier versions

And i got it wrong it wasn't System Config he was in it he done Check Disc aint got a clue..

And all proper Precautions i.e firewalls, anti virus, spyware removers and so on are installed on the Computer

well in that case i can tell you most likely what happened (my opinion, there may be other explanations)

a windows sytem file has probably been corrupted - hence it would boot to a certain point, then fail to open/find that file and reboot... over and over and over.

when he ran check disk, it most likely recovered this file and hence it now boots fine.

as for the cause fo this, it will be one of two things... either your HDD is on the blink and needs close attention/replacing, or something software based on your computer corrupted a system file - be it malware or benign. did you install anything/run anything before this happened?

in that case i'd check the fitness of your drive (it's probs SMART enabled) and check for bad sectors

you've run fresh antivirus scans in additon to addware scans yeah?
