    Carbon Bonnets

Just a quick bit of info on these bonnets as I know a few of you like them and have them. At the garage yesterday a Corsa came in for a new bonnet and windscreen after his carbon bonnet was ripped off by the wind. It smashed his screen. Come to think of it the fastenings can't be that strong, as it's only made of carbon fibre and not metal, so the fastenings won't be as good. The End

Lol, I would think you could probably buy a good one, so checking it first to see how secure the catch is would be advised

Mark you need to see how they are fixed together, very bad design.
Steve slim shady needed his re-bonding as it was comming away. only attched to fibreglass with some bond.

Most companys tell you that you need to fit bonnet pins to stop that from happening.

The better ones have captive nuts in the mesh to help stop the bolts pulling out

I'd agree with Lee on that, I asked a bodyshop about this mod, with a view to fitting one as 'stock'. Their opinion was to go for an aluminium bonnet for weight savings OR bonnet pin a fibreglass or carbon fibre one because of the risk of a single leading edge fixing breaking away.

if you know what you are doing and its a good example you can fit a carbon bonnet with the OE fixing easierly and safely enough. No need for bonnet pins and they look crap on every car other than a motorsport car IMHO.

Just because one has come off doesnt mean they all will!! Especially when we have no idea if it was fitted properly to begin with.

Yes your right, I did not see how it was originaly fitted. It could have been a rush job or poor design. The car has now gone with old bonnet in his boot lol. I was just thinking I would hate to be doing 100mph + and a carbon bonnet flies up on you! I have never looked at a carbon bonnet up close before. It was a job at my yard in my pals garage. I had to reverse this Corsa back for my friend and asked him why the bonnet was missing. He said the strong winds blew it off.

it would indeed be very scary, in a way he was lucky due to it being carbon it should of caused minimum damage to the car, but I bet his bank account isnt happy with the out come....
