    Exclamation Whirring Noise MK4 Astra

Hi All. My car has only recently started making a whirring noise. The only way I can explain it is for Mk4 Astra drivers who have power sterring - If you start your car and its idling, and you turn your steering wheel full lock - Your power sterring makes a weird whirring noise, but thids this noise is much louder than that and comes from the engine... Its goes in line with the Revs of the car. Sounds like ive got a pretend turbo fitted or something lol. I am getting a little worried about it. Any ideas?

    Mk:4
    Model:Sport
    Engine Size:1.6 16V
    Year/Reg:1999
    Doors:3
    What is happening? Whirring Noise
Where / When is it happening? When Gas pedal pressed it gets louder, but happens when idling

    Thanks
    Richie

That just sounds like your power steering. Mine does it too.

Cam belt pulley's whirring? if it is, i'd be at the dealer NOW getting it fixed if it is, otherwise, is it the stereo (turn it off then rev) if it isn't, it's something attached to the accessory belt (or the belt itself could be stuffed)

At first I thought it was something to do with power steering, but now after looking under the hood last night it sounds like the moise is coming from the alternator. Could it make such a noise if it was on the way out? And what would cause this? I have a 5" TFT Screen, aerial, sub, amp, stereo fitted. Would it cause that much strain on it???

The alternator on my Astra sounded pretty rough for the year I had it. Year's worth of driving over 18k, and didn't have a problem.

Just got back, the alternator noise has gone away but I have a shagged o/s wheel bearing aparently. They are gonna swap it over, then I'll just have to wait for the alternator noise to come back.

Hi Guys, Well had my service last tuesday and it cost £160. They took off the alternator and tested it and it seemed to be charging ok, they were not sure if it was the alternator or timing belt that is making the noise. Timing belt is due to be changed in 10K which will be when my MOT is due, so will change that then - tensioners, rollers etc etc then and take it from there. A friend of mine thinks its the rollers. Thanks for help.
