    Diesel Q - Funny Noise

We could do with a Diesel Tech section soon I think...

    A relative has the 2000 1.7 TD G

and has an annoying sound like a bee trapped in a jam jar, only really audible with load rather than at tickover (but it is there at tickover).

It is directly related to revs. - ie - more revs - more humming.

She has the car under warrenty and has taken it back to the garage who isnt main dealer who has said it is something to do with air intake and they would fit a copper coil to it??? - this was the diagnosis without popping the bonnet - sounds a fob off to me.

Any ideas what this may be?

Does the noise go when you press the clutch down?

    yup...

a bit of prodding under the bonnet today - it appears to be coming from the rear of the head of the block, near the injectors (i think they are injectors!!) -

Could be the gearbox input shaft bearings, if you hear the whirring when the clutch is out, then it goes when the clutch is in.

its not a whirring - it is a clattery buzz. How much movement shoul you expect to see on the top of the astra diesel - I compared it to the movement on the 1.8 TD Focus and the astra one rocks about a fair bit more.

Sorry - misread - it is more noticeable stationary with the clutch slightly down. But it is in driving under load.

I've dome up with 2 conclusions thinking about it so far.

1 - the expensive one - the cam profile is not correct - it is causing excessive vibration and in out of balance.

2 - the cheaper option - it has been filled with the incorrect grade of oil.
