    Question K&N or Not K&N

    Hi there.
I have been reading the latest addition of max power and have read that the K&N and simular air filters are not good for mk4 astras as they can damage the airflow meter. They advise using pannel filters. Would be pleased to hear your verdicts to this as am not sure what to do?

Performance points a De restricted air box and panel filter are better, as the cone filter draws in to much hot air, un like you air box that sheilds the induction away from the heat, so the air is colder, denser.

K&N and cone filter just look loads better but a viper kit or a sealed induction kit can give you the visal improvments and power gains

What do u mean by a derestricted airbox? I have a 1.6 16v astra sport with a k&n filter and a cold air feed straight to it, but i cant help feeling this has magnefied flat spots in the power range.

Heres a how-to for derestricting airbox. Thanks to M40COO's help.

By derestricting the airbox you are removing two small pipes that 'restrict' the flow of air going in and out of the airbox. By doing this mod the airflow isnt rectricted anymore and the air flows straight through the panel filter into the engine. (correct me if im wrong anyone).

Quite easy but I had a bit of difficulty taking out second pipe, but worth it tho. I've also got a pipercross panel filter and its a good improvement. Accelerates better and smoother than before.

quite a few people on here have busted air mass meters from various induction kits.

some were lucky and got warranty replacements, but if not you're looking at approx £100 to replace.

The safest route is just a panel filter, I had a foam one of those and I reckon they're worse than a standard filter IMO, stick to a K&N panel filter, better quality

K&N offers good airflow over standard, but not better than some foam filters. Unfourtunately, foam filters are nowhere near as good at filtering - so I would stick with a K&N panel filter and modified airbox , as suggested above.

I have only ever had one car with a K&N fitted and that went straight in the bin, i don't rate them at all.

Been running a K&N panel filter, De-restricted Airbox with Vectra C intake for a good while now. - The car's performance is much more urgent and willing in comparision to standard.
Its cheap to do and well worth it. Most tuners will recommend that this is the set-up you run - they rate it above aftermarket induction kits.

BMC CDA has the best track record atm - gives the best gains and is basically a high flow carbon airbox. - Perfect replacement for OE unit
