Car dealers, must think were stupid !

    hi guys,

just a thread to vent my frustrations about p/ex prices.

went to a dealers on my day off yesterday as i need to change my 2.2 coupe for something 'family' orientated as my other half is expecting our 1st child next year. the price i got quoted for mine was laughable:- heres the details below as i would appreciate some feedback

mine: july 2003 2.2 bertone coupe in silver
    full heated leather
    upgrade to climate control
full irmscher styling pack with all irmscher extras apart from bonnet extension including full irmscher exhaust
only 7,900 miles with full history and in pristine condition

paid £11995 for car plus £950 for styling pack ad exhaust all fitted and painted by VX dealer prior to collection

the salesman who couldnt have been older than 18 came back with his sales manager and offered me £8700 !

a bit insulting considering they have 2 sat in thier indoor showroom with no leather or styling back about 6 mths newer than maine with 14k on the clock and they want £14k for them.

i was told i couldnt expect retail prices on a p/ex which I appreciate as i work in a caravan dealership where i deal with p/ex's all day every day. it seems to me they see a a mid twenty something coming in through the doors and they think im gullable to fall for a daft p/ex price!
i know there has been a lot of chat about coupe prices falling etc but surly not by that margin in 3mths?

mate you lose abt 2K as soon as you take it off the forecourt.

Some dealerships will let it slide but not many.

and most dealers use Glass's price guide which seems value the car at slightly less than Parkers (from my experience anyway)

Put the car in Autotrader, then go slap the salesman with a big wodge of cash. You'll get whatever you're buying cheaper that way.

Sounds about right for a P/X, although I'd put another £200-300 on top of that.

You won't get close to forecourt price for a P/X unless it's in high demand, which Coupés aren't.

Scotty - Part exchange prices suck.

We looked at trading mine in as well as it is only a 3 door and i'm due a baby next year too, but we would lose too much money on it.

I am just going to struggle with a baby seat in mine, won't be ideal but not impossible

it just puts me off spending a lot on a new car because you loose so much money. Dealers pay pennies for trade ins and its difficult to shift cars privately too a lot of the time.

The only decent P/X I ever got was a Mk4 Orion I had. Bought it for £4k, kept it a year and got £3800 P/X against an Escort.

Shame that Orion had a major electrical fault - it didn't charge the battery, even after a brand new alternator, and half the electrics inside were dead. It had the old Mk4 Escort burnt out control box issue. £300 worth of box to fix the problem, and no garentee how long the new box would last.

If you can avoid P/X then you'll save a lot of money.
