    derestricting air box vs MPG??

thinkin of derestricting my airbox and fitting a K&N panel on my 51 plate SXi 16V... heard its worth it for the performance... BUT.. being a sensible bloke as well does it affect mpg/ fuel consumption???

id like the extra oomph but not if its gonna mean giving my money to Texaco more regularly!!!

anyone who knows, let me know

    Ta

If i was you, I'd do the mod, drive around for a while and see how your visits to the petrol station go, if you don't like it, you can always put the pipes back in.

I'm afraid you cannot get extra oomph without using more fuel. you let more air in - the engine lets more fuel in to compensate (not massive amounts, but more than standard).

that makes sense i guess - more air, more fuel!

i think i might semi-derestrict it (remove top tube) and K&N it if u think that will make a difference???

    cheers, Chris.

You might aswell whip both the tubes out while you have the airbox open, otherwise you might aswell not bother.

    Cheers,

re: derestricting air box vs MPG??

I'd have to disagree with DarrylB on this, you can get more oomph without using any more fuel if get the engine to use the existing fuel more efficiently. As far as I know derestricting the airbox allows more air through and also gives you a small induction noise. The pipes are primarily there to reduce this noise. I've done the mod and I found that MPG actually went up not down, acceleration improved as did pickup. All in all a very worthwhile mod especially coupled with a K&N panel filter. I'd also recommend the Veccy C intake pipe mod as this also helps peformance.
