    C20LET vs Z20LET?

Hi people, question from a new member.

Its time for a new car and I can't decide which way to go.

I've had my mind set on a Mk4 Astra GSi Turbo, but at an average of £13k I feel I could have a car 'built' for less which will be faster.

This would consist of a Y2k Astra 2.0 16v SRi, (Approx £4200) with a partially rebuilt C20LET turbo engine supplied and fitted for another £3500. Then fit full new GSi suspention and brakes, approx £800. From here I could go EDS phase 2 (£280 + £500 for intercooler). So roughy speaking I could have a 270bhp 'wolf in sheep's clothing' turbo Mk4 for less than £10k.

I keep being told that the earlier C20LET (red top) turbo engine is the better lump, as it does not have to reach the strict emissions levels of the Z20LET. Also if you look at the cost of tuning both engines, the C20 is far far cheaper for better results.

And a mate of mine used to have one of these, beleived to be the first one done in the uk, and it was awsome. (You might have seen this at Santa Pod running 13 seconds 1/4 mile, its silver and has the reg 'V??? TAT').

I know it would be a hell of a lot easier to buy a GSi, but this might not be as much fun and certainly more expensive to make more fun. But on the other hand I'd like to hear from some GSi owners, what do you think of your cars? Would you recommend any particular tuning package etc?

Please help me out here, this decision is mashing my brain!

    Cheers

The C20LET will offer more BHP + lb/ft per £'s spent

c20let is a far better engine. also more of a surprise seeing a standered asta g fly past than the SRiT or GSi

I wouldn't agree that its the over better engine !

Admittedly it can make higher BHP, but this alone does not define it as a better engine

    re: C20LET vs Z20LET?

May be easier and cheaper going with the C20 but remember its a much older unit hence reliability especially running high power.

Very valid point craig, a std car with a big engine shoved in will probably be worth 5k when you sell even though you bought it for 4.2k as opposed to a gsi which will be worth over 10k for a good while yet.

I used to own a GTE champion 16V and I transplanted a C20LET engine into it and it was definately a rocket but as has already been said reliability is the main issue, my gsi is not as fast as my old mk2 but it definately is a better car, chassis etc

And don`t forget, the C20 is much older than the Z20 with the last ones being made about 1996 iirc

No mate, get a Z20 Gsi and phase 3, more than enough for FWD

Although it would stil be a standard car, Squidge is selling his GSi fort just over £10K.

I agree with Craig, you'll always struggle to sell an engine swap car over a standard car, GSi's do tend to hold reasonable money still can't believe no ones bought Squidges car, perhaps its too cheap
