If someone knows your ip address and they are good with computers what can they do to your pc?

    re: IP Addresses

Depends if you have a decent firewall. If you do then not a lot.

What kind of Internet connection do you have. if it's dial-up then your IP is likely to change each time you connect anyway.

If it's broadband then get a router with NAT (network address translation) and they can't do anything to you. Cos the router won't pass any unsolicited traffic onto it's protected side.

    Agreed.

If you do need a router, I'd recommend the Draytek 2600 or 2500 if you don't need all the features.

Agreed. We use them out on site too, probably got several hundred running out in the wild now.

At home I'm using one of the BT black routers with the original Efficient Networks firmware on it (IE not the BT Crippleware).

Draytek are good - as are Netgear - I've had my DG814 for a couple of years now - good as gold - never had an intrustion or any problems with the box itself. Thats said - i am running other stuff too!

How much can a router protect you? Like, can they protect you from RIAA etc from seeing your shares on P2P programs? (ie emule)

If it makes any difference, the router Im looking at is this one

That is something you have to set up in the p2p program you use. Router will not do that bit - it'll protect from attacks on the network - but if you leave channels or loopholes such as default shares open - then it can't do anything about those itself.

I hope that is what you were asking btw :|

Hmm, yeah I see what you mean. Since I have to share files Im in the middle of downloading, so I suppose there's no way the router could block specific people from accessing them.

Im using peer guardian at the min (its like a personal firewall that blocks known IP's of ppl that you would not want to share with!) But my download rates go thru the floor! I kno its a bit of topic.. but do u kno of a good bit of software that can do the same thing? Or can u reccomend a good p2p proggy? Cheers
