    Quick Diesel Q

Not Vaux - but a Fiat 1.9 JTD (So a bit like the new VX's)

It has a tendancy to cut out, its just been serviced and that didnt cure it.

they didnt replace the glow plugs - now if it was a petrol car - I would say it was poor sparking/sparkplugs. But it being a diesel I havnt a clue

    techie??

    anyone else??

and what do glowplugs actually do other than pre-warm at ignition?

As far as I know glow plugs are just for starting

A neighbour had a problem with his diesel where it would start in the mornings and then cut out which turned out to be the fuel system loosing presure over night.

Apart from that I know nothing

ok - so the fault isnt glo-plug related.....

any other ideas for occasional cutting out.

as I said - serviced - new fuel filter, new battery

    clogged high pressure jets/ignition??

Didn't think JTD engines used glowplugs, what with being Commonrail and all...

I had a very worn 2.2 diesel Laguna which cut out all the time when it was cold - it was just poor compression in the cylinders. It needed plenty of revs to warm it up when cold, with the resulting ploomes of blue smoke.

I think that glow plugs should be replaced at something like 50 / 100 k they are only used for starting and in extream cold conditions. another thing to look at could be water in the fuel filter some garages dont seem to know they need the water draining off ever 5 k or so.
